Flying to India? New e-Arrival Card Required Before You Land

International travellers heading to India must now complete an online form before arrival, part of a new system aimed at speeding up immigration and easing congestion at airports.

If you’re planning a trip to India, be prepared for an updated arrival process. As of 1 October, all overseas visitors must submit their details through a new digital e-Arrival Card at least 72 hours before landing.

The change applies to holidaymakers, business travellers, students, medical tourists, and those attending conferences. Indian nationals and Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cardholders are exempt.

Why the new system?

Until now, visitors were required to fill out a paper disembarkation card on the plane or at immigration counters. India’s Bureau of Immigration says the switch to a fully digital system will help streamline immigration clearance and reduce waiting times at airports.

Authorities also hope the e-Arrival Card will improve accuracy and efficiency in passenger data processing.

How to complete the e-Arrival Card

Travellers must register via the official Bureau of Immigration portal within 72 hours of their scheduled arrival.

The form asks for:

  • Passport details and nationality

  • Purpose of visit (tourism, business, medical, study, etc.)

  • Travel information, including address in India and length of stay

  • Countries visited in the last six days

No document uploads are required. Once submitted, passengers will receive a confirmation email. A digital copy is sufficient for inspection, though officials recommend carrying a printed version.

Important to note

  • The e-Arrival Card is not a visa. Travellers must still obtain a valid Indian visa before entry.

  • Without a completed e-Arrival Card, visitors risk longer processing times or being denied entry.

The Bureau of Immigration said the move is part of a wider effort to make travelling to India “smoother, safer, and more convenient for global visitors.”
